My Melancholia in MALAPASCUA

It felt sad and depressing when I left Malapascua Island. I didn't want to board that boat yet. The sea is so inviting for another swim, for another day of lazing along the beach and reading my book (Life of Pi by Yann Martel) under the comforting trees. I have only spent 4 days in this enchanting island and it's never enough to satisfy my insatiable curiosity for this sunny, charming paradise. Though one can explore the entire island by foot in one day, I know there are still more to discover and learn beyond its idyllic beauty.

The boat operator must have sensed my hesitation to leave the island. "Why don't you stay longer?" he asked. "We have work to do back in Manila, if we stay longer, we might lose our jobs", replied my companion. "Well then, if you lose your job, find another one! There are plenty of jobs for the talented and the industrious", he quickly countered.

His words made me ponder, as if they were keys that opened the locks guarding my hidden desire to leave my corporate "comfort zone" and simply follow my passion to roam. I have heard stories of backpackers who bravely left their jobs and explored the world. Some ended up working in one of their "pit stops" temporarily to earn enough money to enable them to continue traveling.

I need not look far. On our boat ride to the island, we had the opportunity to talk to an American girl who claims to have stayed in Malapascua for almost 8 weeks already. She just went to Cebu City to process her visa extension that day. According to her, she fell in love with the beauty of the island and decided to stay longer. She left her life in the US years ago to travel and live in Asia. Currently, she's a dive instructor in Malapascua.

There's another Swiss-Italian young guy whom I talked to. He's been in the island for more than 3 weeks. I asked when does he plan to leave (Malapascua) and go back to Europe. He simply replied, "I don't know!".

I wish I could have that courage to do the same. Three to five months of roaming around Asia would be enough, I guess. I will miss the Philippines, of course. But I must travel to learn and experience more. Maybe next time, when I book that flight somewhere, I will never buy a return ticket, so I won't be compelled to go back home on a specific date. But then again, where is "home" for a restless soul like me?

TRAVEL INFO:

Malapascua is an island at the northernmost tip of Cebu (the island). It is best known among divers from around the world (yes, most tourists who come here are divers from Europe, US, Japan, Korea, etc.). In fact, when we arrived on Thursday, we never saw Filipino tourists. The locals told us that Pinoy travelers normally arrive on a weekend for a short break. Divers come here to see the legendary Thresher Sharks and some marine wonders such as manta rays.

From the city proper, take a bus at the North Bus Terminal that will bring you to Maya Port. Airconditioned buses (fare: 170 pesos) take longer -- around 5 hours -- for it will pass by several towns. It's more convenient, though. Once you reach Maya Port, there are boats / banca (fare: 80 pesos) that will bring you to Malapascua Island. It's a short trip - around 20 to 30 minutes. The water is shallow and the island is visible from the port.

Accommodations are cheap. A fan room (small dorm type) where we stayed (Purple Snapper) only costs 250 pesos / person. I prefer fan rooms in an island, to really feel the "island ambiance". After all, I am out at the beach most of the time, so getting a room with A/C is just a waste of money for me.

Food is cheap too. Just look for "carinderias" where the locals eat. A complete meal of rice, veggies and fish/meat only cost 40-50 pesos. Ging-ging's is popular among the foreign tourists. They serve a wide variety of meals. A typical Pinoy meal costs 80-100 pesos.

Electricity has improved. No more (or very minimal) power interruptions, as some travel blogs claim. Some resorts offer high-speed internet. Phone signals are strong as well (both Globe and Smart).

Oh, the locals are very courteous and friendly! The children always greet you with "hello" without asking for money or anything. They just give you a warm smile, instead. How precious!

Don't expect five-star services in the island. This is not Boracay.

MANILA: A Closer Look (Part 1)

I find Manila interestingly charming. This may not be the city I want to live in because of its flood-prone and narrow streets, but I still continue to find myself going here at least once a month to experience her alluring vibrancy and chaos. Her rich history and underbelly piques my imagination like no other city in the Philippines. Her invaluable role in the country's politics, religion, trade, education and culture sets her apart from the rest.

Despite her grim appearance, she still possess that indelible character that made her an enviable city in the Far East during her golden, pre-WW II age. One only needs to take a walk to explore and re-discover the remnants of her once glorious past. You'll be surprised how most of them survived, despite utter neglect.

I know there are still more to discover and experience in this city. And I resolve to re-acquaint myself even more with her this 2012.

And to kick-start this resolution, here are some of the photographs I took at the Bonifacio Memorial Shrine beside the Manila City Hall. I alway pass by this area, but never really took the time to stop and ponder on these larger-than-life sculptures. This time, I'm glad I did! I realized how picturesque it can be especially on a sunny day! It's also interesting to observe the people walking by -- some are nonchalant (perhaps, they've seen this thousands of times), while others are also taking pictures.

But what really caught my attention are these kids who seem to have found a playground and a safe corner where they can hide their "valuables" with that imposing statue of a priest. Now, if only all churches would help take care and provide the basic education and nutrition needs of every poor children, there will be no more need for a Reproductive Health Bill.

Just open your eyes wide when you visit Manila, and you'll see what she's really trying to tell you.

PUERTO PRINCESA: The Princess of the West Philippine Sea

My expectations are high for Puerto Princesa City in Palawan. So much has been said about this big city (as the locals claim) that your anticipation has already been heightened even before setting foot on its land.

I went there to film its scenic spots for a travel show so I didn't really have the luxury of exploring it more intimately, like a laidback traveler usually do. Actually, PP is quite hard to explore if you're on a tight schedule and budget. The scenic spots are scattered sporadically that moving around may cost you a lot - both time and money. The best way to cover as many places as you can is to rent your own vehicle (like a van).

One thing that I really noticed about this city is its cleanliness. Trash cans can be seen anywhere, so there's no reason for you to throw your litters anywhere. The buildings are also noticeably low-rise. Our tour guide said that one can't build structures more than 4 or 5 storeys high because they might block an airplane's view of the runway. Hmmm... which leads to conclude that there are probably less than a hundred elevators in this city.

Anyway, if you visit Puerto Princesa, there are three things that you must experience. And these are:

A) NATURE (the beaches, underground river, etc.)

As we know, Puerto Princesa is known for its Underground River (vote for it, by the way!). So, a visit to this city is not complete without dropping by this world-famous natural wonder. I was awed with this nature's creation! I find it mysterious, actually. Once you get inside, play with your imagination as you look at the stone formations. You'll realize that Mother Nature has a sense of humor din pala!

The islands are also worth visiting (i.e. Snake Island), for some swimming or sunbathing. There are no nice beaches, though, along the shores of the city proper. If you want to experience this, you must hire a boat to bring you to its surrounding islands.

Another thing which I really the most is the Ihawig River Firefly Watching /Stargazing . Unfortunately, I was not able to get good pictures of this experience. Basically, you just take a boat that will cruise you down the Ihawig River in a pitch-black night. You will see an abundance of fireflies on the the banks of the river... and also be able to witness the densest concentration of stars (or constellations)! Trust me, this is awesome! Also, since the water is so clean (or alive with biodiversity), the planktons make it glow as you paddle! Imagine you're in the film Avatar... and as you touch the water, it glows, literally!

B) HISTORY and CULTURE

Puerto Princesa is an old city, and thus filled with history. Visit the Ihawig Prison Colony (the prison without walls, as they say) and marvel at its colonial Spanish and American architectures. I love old buildings and I love imagining them in their glories during their heydays.

The city also has a share of grim war stories. Imagine the hundreds of American soldiers who were burned to death by the Japanese in Plaza Cuartel. Include them in your prayers as you visit the Cathedral beside it.

But the city is also home to a different kind of dwellers right now. Visit the Balay Kalipay and meet the cool bunch of people who live there. They are actually urbanites from different parts of the world who chose to live a simple life in the province. There, they become more in touch with nature with their activities (yoga, gardening, etc.) and diet! Food served here is RAW (read: never cooked). I tried the corn and salad... and it's so delicious!

3) FOOD

Yummy. Fresh. Exotic. Playful! Need I say more?

Anyway, have your lunch at Badjao Seafood Restaurant for the freshest and affordable seafood. Take your early dinner at Ka Lui's (you must reserve in advance. They don't accept walk-ins because they're simply fully booked!) for more sumptuous meals. Oh, don't forget to ask for a special and playful dessert! hahaha! And finally, grab some beers at Kinabuch's and experience their exotic dishes for pulutan. I tried the shite, slimy, worm-like kinilaw (i forgot the name) and it tasted good... woody, I suppose (these are harvested from old woods in mangroves, thus the taste).

These are just some of the places to see and things to experience in Puerto Princesa. There are still more to do -- and that entirely depends on you - your time, company and budget, most of all!

ALIW NA ALIW SA ALIWAN FESTIVAL 2011

Every town or city in this country has its own festivities! And most of them are deeply rooted in religious and farming traditions...

In Manila, city dwellers get a glimpse of these festivities from around the country in the annual ALIWAN FESTIVAL. A number of organizations (from various towns/cities) take part in this colorful and merry spectacle to parade their local traditions, beautiful boys and girls, products, artistry and culture!

The parade starts at the Quirino Grandstand and ends in front of Aliw Theatre at the CCP Complex. It's good to see people braving the mid-afternoon heat just to witness this event. The mood is festive and relaxed.

I waited for the parade (floats, costumes, etc.) at Aliw Theatre. I was hoping to get clear pictures with natural light... Unfortunately, the parade arrived early evening and the lights were not strong enough from our position. Anyway, I had fun and it was a great opportunity to experience this kind of grand festivity even in an urbanized city...

represented Luzon (Bulacan) and Visayas (Iloilo)

The girls and the pa-girls! I noticed that there were quite a number of

gay participants in the parade... How energetic they were and they

really loved their costumes!

I compare these bands to warriors ... when they beat their drums,

you can see the warrior-like intensity and passion in their eyes!

ON MY WITS' END IN CALAUIT!

Palawan never ceases to surprise its visitors! The province (or its group of islands) is never called "the last frontier" for nothing!

On its northwestern side lies the island of Calauit - a game preserve where animals are free to roam and propagate! (to know more about the island, visit http://www.calauitisland.com/ ).

Our tour guide told us that this island turned into a game preserve by then Pres. Marcos as a gift to his son, Bongbong. Animals were imported from Africa. Sadly, the succeeding administration never prioritized its maintenance on their budget allocation, thus the island slowly went into oblivion... Consequently, the welfare of the animals suffered. (Yes, the island needs a budget for veterinarians, maintenance of facilities, etc.)

But the current administration of Palawan province realized its tourism potential, and efforts are under way to improve the game preserve's deteriorating state. Let's just hope that the animals, more than the tourists, benefit from this...

DEMYSTIFYING MT. BANAHAW

We have different traditions during Holy Week. Others flock to the beaches for some sun, sea and sand. Some simply stay home and do a DVD marathon. And quite a few still practice the annual pilgrimage to what they consider as a Holy Place.

Mt. Banahaw has been in our books as a mystic mountain, possessing powers that heal. It's waters, which flow from the depths of its springs are said to cure illness and bring good health to those who drink or bathe it.

And for these people who brave the heat and the rough roads just to reach this legendary mountain, every effort is worth it!

There are many points of entry to Mt. Banahaw. This is from Dolores, Quezon. When I visited the site last year, some areas were closed down (especially the higher grounds) in efforts to restore and revive the ecology. This is the foot of the mountain, where people continue to flock, get some "holy water" and have some bonding moments with families, friends and the gods.

I never thought that I would be able to visit Siargao! Thanks to my job, I was given the opportunity to visit this faraway island paradise famous for its wondrous waves surfers all over the world flock to.

If you're a surfer or simply want to see world-class surfers in action, the best time to visit Siargao is in the months of September to November, where the waves perfect for surfing. This is also the time when tournaments are held, participated by surfing superstars from different countries.

Getting there is quite exhausting. You can take a flight from Manila to Surigao del Norte and ride a boat going to Siargao Island. The boat ride is kind of an adventure with big waves and strong currents shaking your not-so-large sea vessel.

The other option is to take a flight to Cebu, and transfer to another smaller plane (Cebu Pacific - like the ones that land in Caticlan) going to Siargao. No more boat rides.

In our case, we took a flight from Manila to Cebu and got an ex-deal from a flying school that would take us to Siargao. That means, riding on a Cessna plane with a student pilot (mostly, foreigners) and an instructor, and me as the only passenger. (Each staff was assigned a plane individually).

At first, I was so nervous! The wind up there can easily make your ride a turbulent one... but as we ascend higher and higher (almost 10,000 feet), the ride became smoother and pleasant!

Siargao is a delight! I am surprised to see so many foreigners there, mostly Europeans, Aussies and Japanese. There were only a handful of Pinoy tourists and surfers. There are a number of beaches that cater to everyone's needs - for surfers and swimmers alike. The hostels / lodgings are cheap enough (fan rooms are only 500-700 pesos per day, air-conditioned rooms range from 1000 - 1500 pesos).

THE RUINS : A Hidden Old-World Treasure

Hidden behind the vast sugarcane plantation and rows of middle-class homes is Talisay City's toast to history and wealth of Negros (Occidental) during the golden years of sugar production. The Ruins is an old mansion owned by the powerful and wealthy Ledesma-Lacson clan turned into a tourist destination / restaurant / cafe in the outskirts of Talisay City - just 10 minutes away from Bacolod.

SAN VICENTE, PALAWAN: The Next Tourism Hotspot

The island province of Palawan never runs out of destinations blessed with unmatched and pristine beauty. Just 5 to 6 hours drive from the capital city, Puerto Princesa, another paradise awaits intrepid and curious traveler who is always in search of that unspoilt paradise...

San Vicente is a quiet municipality in Northwestern, Palawan boasting of equally captivating islands and beaches. It is currently undergoing a series a development as the town is envisioned to be the next tourism hotspot in the country. Our local guide tells us that a number of hotel chains and prominent individuals have already bought properties in the area. In a few years' time, resorts and hotels will be built to accommodate the expected influx of local and foreign tourists.

I guess I'm fortunate to see and experience the place while it's still unspoilt. The sheer beauty of the islands, sans the manicured, man-made landscape, is beyond words. If you don't call this Paradise, there must be something wrong with you!

Seeing this made me think twice to swim at the beach.

has not shone on its shores yet. At midday, the beach becomes

blindingly white,just like Boracay. The sand's texture is fine.

The beach is actually 14 kms.long that's why it's been dubbed as

the Longest White Beach in the country.

As for me, I believe the island should be protected

from big hotel companies who will only disrupt the island's

ecosystem. Let it remain as it is... and let people go here

as they please, without paying too much fees.

Well, the island is about an hour's boat ride from the main

town of San Vicente. The seas can be rough during noon to

mid-afternoon, so expect a very bumpy ride. As soon as you

reach the Cove, the waters are already calm and the

view is just magnificent!

Arroyo government's plan to boost the town's tourism potential,

a new international airport is being built right in San Vicente.

The airport, according to our guide, will have direct flights

from Thailand, Japan, Bali, etc.

And to experience San Vicente's Long Beach, one no longer

needs cross the seas, as the airport is conveniently

located near the coast.

San Vicente is also just 3 hours away from El Nido.

Once the airport becomes operational, it can cut the travel

time from Puerto Princesa to El Nido significantly.

HOMETOWN: LA CARLOTA CITY

I may have been born in Manila, but I consider La Carlota City as my hometown -- the land of my maternal ancestors.

La Carlota City is approximately 2 hours drive from the capital city of Negros Occidental, Bacolod. It is a city dotted with endless fields of sugarcane plantations and home to the oldest sugar mills in the province.

Typically, your address here simply states which hacienda you are located -- very reminiscent of the feudal set-up which I still think still exists up to this day.

I am yet to explore the scenic spots here frequented by tourists. Perhaps, in my next visit, I'll go to Guintubdan where a majestic and mystic falls await visitors. Or try exploring the towns by bike and get lost in the sweet and charming characters of genuine Negrenses.

Hacienda Salamanca is owned by the Ledesma clan. Almost 80% of my

immediate relatives live here.

The Balay Dako, where the Ledesmas lived while they were

manning the hacienda. My mom told me that during strong typhoons,

this is where they all used to stay for shelter.

An ancient church at the town plaza. My mother's high school is just

beside the church, and this is where they held their daily prayers

and rosaries. Not much has changed, according to my mom...

One thing I noticed when I first entered the church is the state of its walls.

There were green moss on some parts, and the windows were filled

with bird dung, producing a pungent smell of antiquity and nostalgia.

A typical past time of my relatives - mahjong! Oh well, this is part

of Negrense culture. Remember the film, Oro Plata Mata? Whatever

happens, as long as the mahjong set and table is intact, everything

will be alright... I used to play mahjong, but now,I sadly forgot

how this game works due to lack of friends here in Manila whom

I can play with. Besides, Manila is soooo addicted to Poker!

there even when she was still young. That means, these sturdy

trees abound amongst the sugarcane fields. It's leafy and long

branches provide a cool shade from the enervating sun...

DUBAI... A DESERT LULLABY

It was my first ever trip out of the country.

I can't wait to be in a real desert, with endless sand and unexplainable heat...

I can't wait to see the only 7-star hotel in the world, the Burj Al Arab...

I can't wait to gaze at those good-looking Arabs...

I can't wait to get lost in a foreign land...

Oh, Dubai... like a beguiling lullaby humming in my mind...

.... still inviting, still mesmerizing.

The King of Dubai loves horses! It is said that his horses are treated like royalties as well. Annually, there's an equestrian competition held here, with millions of dollars at stake for the winners.

Before the Burj Khalifa / Burj Dubai was erected (it was still being built by the time we went there), the Burj Al Arab was the structure that represented Dubai. Upon seeing this for the first time, I was really mesmerized with its beauty! In fact, I shed a tear!

TAKE A RIDE!

In my years of traveling, I always look forward to the different modes of transportation that will take me to my destination....

Airplanes are, of course, the fastest way around. My favorite part is when the plane is taking off... that moment when you feel its full speed as it runs on the ground, and slowly taking off to defy gravity. My least favorite part is the landing... the uncertainty of getting that smooth transition from being airborne to being in contact with the ground.

Riding a small plane is one adventure I will never forget. Each of the production team was assigned his/her own plane. I felt like a VIP! The lightness and size of the plane were enough to make me really scared, as soon as we took off. You felt so vulnerable and you could actually feel how the wind up there affects your flying. But the magnificent view made me forget my fear... The plane only flies at 1000 feet, so you can really see the details of the islands scattered in the emerald and deep blue seas.

(Route: Cebu to Siargao, 1.5 hours)

Habal-habal (simply a motorbike) is a popular means of transportation in some far-flung areas in the country. It's actually a fun ride, knowing that there will be no cars, buses or any big vehicles that will hit or bump you. Never mind the dust, it's part of nature like the trees and the rustic landscape that surround you.

In Corregidor, this is the only way to get around the island. An improvised jeepney where one can have a good view of the island's ruins.

As a nation of 7107 islands, it is only appropriate to experience traveling around by ship. I remember as a young boy, whenever we go to our province (Negros Occidental), we would always take the ship. Back then, the facilities were still very simple and poorly maintained. Thank heavens, traveling by ship now is not that boring anymore, as numerous activities can now be done onboard.

The 7107 Islands Cruise was a great way to discover and explore our country. It was an attempt to familiarize Filipinos with the concept of "cruise ship". However, due to "politics", the ship's operation is currently on hold.

I was able to visit Coron, Palawan with these ships - 7107 Islands Cruise (2009, above) and the T/S Kapitan Felix Oca (2010, below).

T/S Oca is a training ship where cadets from the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific are trained with the intricacies of shipping. The ship also happens to be the venue of my first Extra Challenge episode. I never thought that I would get to ride Oca again... It's a great feeling to get aboard this ship once more. The challenges... the conversations... the haggardness... they all came back vividly :-)

Speaking of sea vessels, this is the boat that takes passengers from Manila to Corregidor. Smooth and short ride...

(By the way, it was only in Corregidor and the waters of Bataan that T/S Oca brought us for our Extra Challenge shoot).

Of course, when you travel to the Philippines to explore its islands... you can't get away with these BOATS in all shapes and sizes!

SPECTACULAR CORON

This is my second time in Coron. I am still amazed and awed with its rustic and pristine beauty. I wouldn't mind going back here again and again. It's simply spectacular!

The Twin Lagoon. Before, the only way to get to the other lagoon is thru swimming in a hole underneath the rocks. If it's low tide, it's quite easy to do. But if the waters rise, you must really take a deep breath and dive. But now, they already made a make-shift ladder where you can simply climb up and get to the other side.

One of the many rock formations of Coron. Unlike in El Nido, these rocks are usually clustered near each other.

Probably the most photographed islet in Coron. Became so popular after Mabuhay Magazine (PAL) put the photo in its cover 2 or 3 years ago. Since then, no Coron visit is ever complete without a photo on this spot. The spot, by the way, is the halfway point of a short hike going to Kayangan Lake. The spot is actually the entrance of a cave.

The Kayangan Lake - reputed as the Philippines' cleanest lake. I think this lake is a volcano crater... I'm not sure. hehehe... Great place to swim, though. So crystal clear, and the water is brackish, which means a mixture of seawater and "tabang" (spring/mineral water).

EL NIDO... PARADISO!

El Nido is one of my dream destinations in the country. I have always been intrigued with its karsts / stone formations, and its clear waters. And when I got there, my initial impression was... WOWWWW!

It's really a land of wonders! The stones mountains that surround the town plaza were so magnificent, one gets a feeling of amazement and intimidation upon seeing them all over you. As an urbanite, I am used to seeing tall skyscrapers surrounding me. But these karsts are really magical! I wouldn't mind staring at the them whole day!

The islands are also beautiful, and so are the waters surrounding them. Now I know why foreign tourists love this part of Palawan. You can actually see them in the islets/islands enjoying the waters or just the view! Our nation is indeed blessed!

I just observed that most Pinoy tourists who were at the lagoon were quite funny! They were so afraid to jump in the crystal clear and calm waters despite having their life vests on. And once they're on the water, they cuddle together like playing "the boat is sinking, group yourselves into..."! And just a few meters away, you can see the foreign tourists snorkeling without their vests on, moving (or swimming) or swimming around like children thrown in a pool! How ironic that as a nation surrounded with waters, most Pinoys don't know how to swim... or are afraid of the sea/waters.

El Nido is such a paradise... and the only way to truly enjoy is to dive into its sparkling beauty, literally and figuratively!

VIRGINS IN BICOLANDIA!

I have always wanted to see the magnificent Mayon Volcano. I have been to Naga City several times (for work-related purposes), but I didn't have the opportunity to go further down south in Iriga, Albay to see the world-famous Mayon and the ruins of Cagsawa Church.

Luckily, my friend was invited to visit the University of Northeastern Philippines in Iriga City for a consultancy assignment. He requested to bring me with him, and so... off we went to Bicolandia!

After an hour of plane ride from Manila to Naga City, we needed to travel another 45 mins to 1 hour by land to reach Iriga. We were billeted in our hotel, the Iriga Plaza Hotel, right in the heart of the town... and still, no Mayon Volcano in sight. We were told that it's another hour of travel to Cagsawa / Daraga. But it's alright... we took some rest first and treated ourselves with a nice meal. Unfortunately, i'm not really a fan of spicy and coconut-based foods! Which means, a trip to Bicol is always a gastronomic nightmare for me... Thank heavens, there are already a good number of restaurants down there who realized that there are people like me who just don't eat spicy and coconut-based food...

And finally, after a day of meeting the University officials and going around town, it's time to see Mayon! The Bicolanos have this funny saying that if it's your first time to see Mayon and be lucky enough to see the tip / crater, that means you are still a VIRGIN! According to them, the tip is always covered with thick clouds, even on a sunny day. (Actually, most mountaintop are always covered with clouds like the Makiling, Arayat, etc.)

Well, well, well.... the tip/crater appeared while we were there! And our guides/hosts officially labeled us as VIRGINS in Bicol! But we wittingly retorted that this "virginity" is something that we need to lose while we are there! Hmmm.... did we or didn't we?

I am still amazed at how the force of nature buried such a wonderful structure back then... and how sturdy this church's belfry is! Still standing after hundreds of years... According to the information we gathered, the Cagsaua Church was built in 1700s and was buried by rocks and lava during the eruption of 1814.

And today, this has become a famed symbol of Mayon's destructive force. A sterling and gripping reminder of how something so beautiful as Mayon Volcano can be so ruthless and indiscriminating.

The Church of Daraga built in 1773. This sturdy Baroque structure which is made of stone has been a refuge during the 1814 eruption. Situated on a higher ground, the church survived several eruptions that followed.

The church became the headquarters of the Japanese forces during WW2. It also suffered major damages during the heavy bombings of the said war. What a shame that it was the work of man (the war) that damaged the church...

Restoration took place in 1971-73.

Wet and Gay at PUERTO GALERA!

Puerto Galera has been reputed as the "IT" destination during the Holy Week among gay men. Just take a bus (from Manila) going to Batangas port at this time of the year, you will immediately notice a good number of gay men (from the straight-acting ones to the effeminates) all going to ONE destination -- Puerto Gaylera!

I don't have any historical reference yet how this trend started. I only caught up with the trend in 2007, when a friend invited me to experience PG during Holy Week. For a change, why not?

And it was total chaos indeed! There were just too many people... mixed crowd, but predominantly gays. It was fun though...

The shores of the White Beach can be busy with boats arriving,

thus making swimming quite risky. The waters are also "cantilado"

which means, it can get instantly deep just a few feet from the shore.

There are more "peaceful" beaches though, at the other side

of the shore. Less people come here and practically no boats at all!

The mountains at the back are always covered with thick

clouds... I always notice that.

There are some surprises PG is offering for the inquisitive travelers...

At the farthest end of the shore (you must take a tricycle to get there...

that's how far it is) can be found the BEST ITALIAN restaurant in the area.

The place gets really crowded especially in the afternoon...

Most who come here are foreigners and families.

LUCA'S offers the best and the most authentic Italian dishes prepared

by no other than ... LUCA! He's an Italian guy who settled in the

island and established this restaurant...

Food servings are really big... and the prices are very affordable!

When we ate here, though, we just finished island hopping

and swimming, and my tired body needed all the carbs it lost

during the strenuous activities... ergo, I was able to finish

this plate of pasta! hahaha...

White Beach can be boring during the day.. So, it's better to

rent a boat like this one and explore the other islands...

Go snorkeling at the Coral Garden... It's a must!

Going to Puerto Galera every year could become a trite

experience. But what makes us come back year after year

are the opportunity to meet new friends or simply seeing

CORREGIDOR: A Tour Back in Time

This is my third time visiting the historic island of Corregidor. I am always fascinated with its history and mystery.

Every visit is special and memorable. My first one was back in 2004... It was my first assignment for the reality show Extra Challenge on GMA Network. We were asked to do an ocular inspection in the island and see what interesting "challenges" we can actually do there. Together with a senior producer, we went to Bataan and took a small boat going to the island. The boat was really small... not the typical ones you ride going to Puerto Galera from Batangas port. We were only 3 in the boat - me, the other producer and the boatman. We can't move that much, because we might capsize. Anyway, thank God, we reached the island safely... and got back to the mainland dry and safe.

The second one was the shoot itself. We went there during the evening and challenged our celebrity contestants to visit the ruins of a hospital which was said to be haunted with troubled spirits. The whole crew was on standby outside... and the challengers bravely entered the premises of the ruins with only a camera mounted on their head and a small flashlight. Mind you, it was pretty scary... but fun! Yes, one of the guests confessed hearing voices and seeing strange things inside, thus she ran outside very scared.

The cinema - my favorite spot in the island. Probably the only place

where our heroes were happiest that time -- seeing their favorite

stars on screen or simply being with their dates.

Get inside... and imagine the fear our heroes felt when

the island was bombed incessantly by the Japanese forces...

The last time I went there was last year (2009) for another shoot (Dare Duo, QTV). This turned out to be more fun and relaxed. We just documented the typical day tour in the island, with some spiels and activities for the hosts and guests. I learned more about the island this time. And the travel was more convenient. We took the ferry at the CCP Complex together with the number of tourists (mostly balik-bayans and foreigners - Americans and Japanese). The ferry was very convenient... airconditioned and sailed smoothly. We also spent the night there... and contrary to popular belief, the island isn't scary at all! In fact, it's so peaceful and lovely out there - day or night. The stars are so visible, scattered like gems in the dark skies...

If you refuse to visit the island for a simple reason that there could ghosts or other elements out there, you are missing a lot!!! You are denying yourself of knowing your history and of visiting a lovely and awesome place...

I must say that every Filipino who loves to travel should consider this in their list of places to go.

(By the way, Corregidor is not part of Bataan... It's still under the jurisdiction of the province of Cavite).

ONDOY: What Happens Now?

We were all caught by surprise on that fateful Saturday afternoon. Some of us went to work, while others stayed in bed longer - after all, it's a weekend. Some, however, were already cautious of the nonstop rain that might cause flooding, especially in low lying areas. But, what transpired on midday was beyond our imagination, almost a hyper-reality. It was something that most of us could only see in a Hollywood film, but this time, it was real... and it was here.

We are still in a state of shock, of disbelief. Television images and personal videos and photos posted online are more than enough to stimulate pity, grief, and on the brighter side, heroism among us. We are in the mood of extending our hands, of volunteering to help others. And when the waters finally subside, most of us might just go on with our lives...

This should not happen for there are surely people who are accountable for this tragedy.

Why weren't we informed that this tropical storm carries with it massive amounts of rain? Why were the people who live near the rivers not informed about the releasing of waters from the nearby dams? Why is Marikina City so ill-equipped with this disaster knowing that it is so prone with this kind of flooding? Have they forgotten the great flood which recently happened that swept off most of the "tiangges" or the Christmas bazaar at the riverbanks? I remember it vividly!

Each of us may have our own questions why this happened. We have to demand answers. Perhaps, in next year's elections, we must not forget to ask the candidates about their platforms for the environment (others are suggesting that we must also take Population Control seriously as well). This has been ignored most of the time, but we must really, really take this seriously now.

Well, elections are still several months away. In the meantime, we must act on our own to help Mother Nature and in a way, prevent this massive destruction to ever happen again:

Maybe supermarkets should start imposing a "Plastic Bags For Sale" (on a hefty price) so that everyone will be compelled to bring their own recyclable bags when doing groceries.

Every school should have a Tree Planting field trips instead of going to the Mall of Asia.

Cars with only one person (the driver) should not be allowed to travel - at least on major routes.

Offices should only buy and use recycled papers.

Fastfood chains should stop using styros for take-out orders. If they can't, don't eat or order there at all. Stop patronizing these establishments which continue to pollute our environment. They even make us FAT!!! Eat fruits, instead!

Don't live near a river. That's elementary Geography. Rivers swell ... it's a fact of nature. Otherwise, take the risk.

Our nature is now slowly taking charge of her territory. Sooner or later, another disaster will happen. The same problems will occur, the same questions will be left unanswered. That's the cycle of our fate. Clearly, and maybe, unfortunately ... WE ARE NOT THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

AN ARTSY TOUR

Manila never fails to amaze me. I know it still has a lot of places to discover and explore.

It was only recently that I got the chance to re-visit the Museum of the Filipino People and the National Museum. I thought they were still dark and gloomy inside, with that distinct smell of history permeating permanently in your nose, in your clothes, in your body. But I was wrong.

Happily, these museums have been renovated and "modernized". The lighting system have been upgraded, as well as the airconditioning. They are also well-maintained by the staff, who make sure that cleanliness is impeccable and systems are in place.

Visiting these museums are no doubt a great alternative from the usual hangout places we normally go to. It gives us a sense of appreciation for our culture and history. Take time to read the captions, and try to do more research when you get home to truly appreciate and understand what the artifacts, the artworks are all about.

According to John Silva, the museum's Senior Consultant, Jose Rizal became a renaissance man that he has become because of his regular visits in the world's biggest museums and libraries in Europe. There, he learned a lot of things that sparked more yearning for learning and of course, critical thinking.

I know this won't be the last of my visits in our country's museums. I am now eyeing to visit the Ayala Museum, the Metropolitan in BSP, etc. this coming days. Seeing the works of great people and our ancestors stimulates my mind... my curiosity, and most of all, aggrandize my sense and concept of beauty.

I have been quite busy with Facebook lately. Nope, I don't play games. I just find it tiresome maintaining several sites (FB, Multiply, Blogspot, Twitter, etc). In short, I only concentrated on Facebook, almost forgetting that I have this blogspot to update.

I have a lot to do! May I find time to post all my travels lately (Palawan, Bicol, etc.)

SUMMER IS HERE!

Summer is my favorite time of the year.

I am happiest on this season! I can't wait to hit the beach, get a good tan, and swim endlessly!

This year, I have plans of going to Bohol (Alona Beach, Panglao Island) and visit the historic sites in the mainland. Of course, I need to see the Chocolate Hills and the Tarsiers...

This Holy Week, however, I am going back to Puerto Galera... This is a reunion and ritual of sorts among my ghey friends... hahaha.... Mindoro Sling... here i go again!!!

World Gold Medal at New York Festivals

I am still in awe and disbelief when I learned about the award -- World Gold Medal, Biographies/Profiles category.

And today, we were on the Inquirer (Sunday / Jan. 25) and I learned that we beat Christian Amanpour's works for CNN... and another one about Dame Helen Mirren...

The enormity and the prestige of the award suddenly began to sink in...

Gosh, what a feat we've achieved!

Christmas season should be merry...

I just have this strange sadness ... because December passes by so fast, then, it's January... another year... another birthday... another moment to hide away...

Golf is probably the stupidest sport (if we can even call it a sport!) ever invented!

I hate golf, simply because of the fact that it destroys the environment just to satisfy the whims of its wealthy players!

A golf course is not just a tiny piece of land... Imagine the number of trees torn down? And imagine the amount of water used everyday to maintain its well-manicured grass?

And it's not even a sport for all! It is only played by a few who can afford to buy the expensive equipments, to pay the cabbie, and the lofty membership fees! Gosh!!! Why oh why?

Ilocandia Tour 2008

I have been to Ilocos several times before. And each trip is always a revelation about this far and hot region.

In my recent visit last October, I really felt how far it was to go there... Perhaps, our driver was moving so slowly (averaging only at 60 kph), thus the 8-hour travel turned into a gruesome 10-hour drive. Also, I was sick that time, so I really felt the discomfort of travel.

Nevertheless, this trip revealed another facet of Ilocos Sur for me. I learned quite a few things, and it's always nice to go back to the places you've once visited before...

I will post some of my travel pictures next time... They're just too many, and I'm quite impatient to upload them all....

SUNSET COVE... in BATAAN.

I recently went to Morong, Bataan to take part in the season finale shoot of Midnight DJ. It was my first time to visit Morong and I was impressed with the new expressway (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway) that lessened the travel time of getting there. It was a very smooth ride and we were travelling at 160 kph... That's fast!

The beach was fine enough. When we got there in the morning (the sun was barely up from the east), the sand and the sea were not yet inviting... It was almost black-ish...

But the midday sun revealed its beauty... and I appreciated the verdant land (or hills) that safely protects the beach from the waves...

But the most spectacular view of all was none other than the sunset...(after all, this cove is named after this). It was fast and sweet... very lovely, indeed!

VIGAN: The Return
